While dealing with the diaspora “camp girl” drama sagas for the 100,000th time, I decided to look into Tayo as a creative and artist—long before she became an Aunty of two Canadian children! #ChildProtector #ProtectiveAuntiesMatter.
I just found this link and, OMG, if you really know me (or Rungyi, or Taaka, or Kabs, or Jayne), you know we would automatically adopt her into our sisterhood! When we met pre the film “HBD by Tayo” (which for the clearest record was an absolute BLAST!!!! She is so talented!) I felt like I was sitting down for a Starbucks Tea catch up with Taaka!
Kevin’s sister is ten years younger than him. Age gaps like that can really shape how people understand family history and conflict.
It reminds me of growing up with my elder sisters, who are eight to eleven years older than me. When things happened in the family, they would sometimes say, “One day we’ll explain.” At the time, I trusted that there would be a moment when everything would make sense—when the missing pieces would finally be shared.
But sometimes that day never comes.
Instead, you grow up sensing that there were important events, tensions, or decisions made long before you were old enough to understand them. You can feel that history exists, but you’re left to interpret it through fragments—small comments, reactions, and things people choose not to say.
That’s why I think about dynamics like Kevin and his sister’s. When someone is ten years younger, they often inherit the emotional aftermath of situations they didn’t witness firsthand. They may see the results of conflicts, the alliances, or the distance between people, but not the original story that created those patterns.
And when explanations are always postponed with “one day we’ll explain,” younger siblings can grow up trying to understand family realities that were never fully spoken aloud. Sometimes the silence itself becomes part of the story. #StillClaire #StillCare
